Its been a month since my convocation on 11th October 2009. Thanks to Szakif for the special acknowledgement about my speech. In this entry, I just want to share what you should know about valedictory speech in IIUM.
1. Nomination and selection
My lecturer has chosen five potential students from my department to be submitted to the Kulliyyah. Then, the Kulliyyah will choose who is the best student for each category such as academic, cocurricular and overall for each department.
2. Audition
I was informed two months earlier regarding the valedictory speech and the theme. All best students was invited to go for an audition in front of IIUM officers. Through this audition, they will select one best students as a valedictorian.
3. Preparation
After I was selected as valedictorian, I have to prepare my own speech. The speech should inline with the convocation theme. The speech should have three languages, which are English, Arabic and Malay. The length of the speech should be between five to ten minutes. However, I’m glad that lecturers from CELPAD helped me and other valedictorians to prepare the speech. But its not easy for some of us who have commitment to come to IIUM for the meeting and consultation.
4. Recording
After we have corrected the grammar mistakes and ensure the fluentness of the Arabic phrase, we have to record our speech in a studio at CELPAD. During the recording session, we can listen to our performance, intonation and speed.
5. The convocation day
The most awaited day has come and we have to deliver our speech on the beautiful stage. A committee will hand us a salutation sheet which include the list of VIP and guests for the session before we get on the stage. After all students have received their scroll, followed by the award for best students, now its the time for the speech.
6. Documentation
Beginning of the 24th Convocation ceremony, IIUM has gazetted the convocation ceremony in an official publication. We have to submit our speeches to IIUM as references for the future.
I guess that’s all that I can share regarding my experience as a valedictorian. I’m wishing all the best for the all IIUM graduates and students too!
