KUALA LUMPUR: The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is offering its expertise through the IIUM wind tunnel testing facility to all car manufacturing companies to test any new car designed and developed by them.
IIUM Deputy Rector for Research and Innovation Prof Dr Ahmad Faris Ismail said aerodynamic stability, engine cooling or ventilation effectiveness and many other related aspects were examples of car qualities that could be measured and optimised in the IIUM wind tunnel and associated laboratories such as the engine test bed.
The university was keen and willing to deal with those companies which were interested in the project, he said in a statement here today. The RM10-million wind tunnel project, launched in 2002 and completed recently, would enhance the contribution of the university in the field of science, technology and research, he added.
Based on the widely acceptable worldwide wind tunnel standards, the IIUM wind tunnel is currently one of the largest wind tunnels in Malaysia, with excellent flow quality and instrumentation.
Dr Ahmad Faris said that nowadays it was common practice in industrialised countries to always include wind tunnel testing before a new project of high-rise buildings, long span bridges, airports and towers.
He said the wind tunnel could be regarded as a general purpose low subsonic wind tunnel since the maximum test section wind speed that could be reached was still within the low subsonic wind speed regime of 180km/hr. The IIUM wind tunnel will be very useful for aerospace and automotive engineering programmes, aerodynamics research and for certain aerodynamics-related product development.
The wind tunnel is also equipped with a six-component force balance to measure lift, drag, side force and moments. This is a large capacity calibrated balance with an average accuracy of 0.042 per cent of the full scale.
Minister of Higher Education Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin is scheduled to launch the IIUM wind tunnel on Dec 1 at the IIUM Wind Tunnel Laboratory, Kulliyyah of Engineering, IIUM, Gombak, Kuala Lumpur. — BERNAMA
